     CHAPTER TWELVE
          I
was always so lonely and never had any friends. So, out of
loneliness, one Sunday I was at Hope Gardens, just walking
around, when this young man came up to me and said, “Hey,
good-looking — looks like you could use a friend.” And with those
words, that's how my other life started.
We sat down and talked and shared stories. In a way, our stories
sounded similar — a stepson not loved by a stepfather and being abused
by him, so he left and lived on his own. That reminded me of my own
life. Only difference was, I didn't have the courage or the means to go
out on my own. But that was all we had in common.
After hours of talking, we said goodbye with a promise to meet again.
The second time, I told him of my little girl, who by this time was a
little over a year old. He was very civilised about it. He took me to see
where he lived. We didn’t spend any time getting to know each other
          — big mistake. I needed a place to stay. He needed a girlfriend.
He was not the most handsome, but my reasoning was: I had two good-
looking guys who left me high and dry — so what did I have to lose?
Little did I know. In a short time, I was pregnant again. We were both
happy. But eight months later, I had a baby boy.
