P. 41

Then I went into rewind — that little one night I spent with Mr. Driver
did not go to waste. So I had to explain it all to him. In less than a year,

I was once again pregnant. The stress of having two kids that were not

his became too much for me. I was dying from guilt.

I developed a large abscess on the inside of my thigh and had to seek

medical help. I went to the University Hospital, which had just recently
opened, to have it assessed. The thing was so large and painful — I

cried like a baby. After checking it out, they said they would have to

lance it. I had no idea what that meant. I made the appointment to go
          and have it done.

Without any anaesthetic, they cut that thing open and squeezed it out.
You could hear me scream a mile away. I couldn’t walk properly or sit

down for days — maybe weeks.

By this time, my stepfather had gotten married again. So I took my little

girl to the country and left her with them, promising to come back for

her when I could. Of course, they took good care of her. I went back a
few times, but not often enough for her to know me.

Meanwhile, I was struggling. I was having more babies. I even had
twins — that was an experience I will never forget. I never knew that I

was having twins until they were being born. The doctor said after the

first one came out, “I think there is another one there.” The problem
          was, they were both girls.
