Canadian?” Needless to say, they were not impressed because they
didn’t know there were Black Canadians. But we sang at a church that
Saturday night and at the same church the Sunday morning, and they
loved our singing. So, when we were leaving, they gave us a nice send-
off.
We also visited Disney World in Florida and had a great, exciting time
there. Plus, we were always going to conferences and getaways up
north while we were living for the Lord. We were having good, clean
fun.
Then came the time for our pastor to retire, so there was another big
change.
During this time, I had a job with a company called TriBar. The
company assembled police radars and those huge signs—the ones you
would see on the highways and on top of buildings. I liked my title:
Electronic Assembler. At the time, I was the only Black person working
there. My supervisor, who came after me, decided after a while she
wanted to get her friends in there. That’s okay, but she wanted to get
me out. Her reason was #1: I was Black and I was a Christian. So, she
would tamper with my work overnight and set me up the next day.
When I complained, she took me into the office and said that I was
accusing her of tampering with my work. I told my boss I did not accuse
her personally, but I said someone was tampering with my work
overnight, and whoever was doing it had better stop. Or what? she
asked. And that was the end of that.
