CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
A
t this point in my life, I realized that I needed the Lord Jesus
as my Savior. I could not continue to live this miserable life,
so I started watching services on television. At that time,
there weren’t very many of them on, but I saw one I liked. It was called
the Queen's Way Cathedral, with Pastor Ruthledge. It was very far, but
I took two different buses to get there. I attended there for a while
because the preaching was good—until suddenly, scandal broke out in
the church. The pastor was gay. I left and was told of another church
called the Oakwood Wesleyan, named after a man named John Wesley.
In other words, it was a Wesleyan church that was in 1988. Unknown
to me, there was a split taking place. One half of the church went one
way, leaving the other half behind. And so began my Christian journey.
One weekend, someone invited me to a crusade. What I didn’t know
was that it was a Seventh-day Adventist church. The preaching was
good, but I was scared to death. I will never forget him—a very small
guy, about five feet tall, with a voice like thunder. He preached from
Matthew twenty-four. I swear I was going to die that night and go
straight to hell because I was not baptized. They had this pool all set up
to baptize the same night if you would let them. But I was not quite
ready to be a Seventh-day Adventist.
