CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
I
learned to trust in the LORD with all my heart and not to lean on
my own understanding. In all my ways, I would acknowledge
Him, so He will direct my path.
By this time, my son got married and had a baby girl. Since I was
retired, I was invited to come and babysit her. So my son sold our
condo, and with collaboration between us and his wife, who also sold
her townhouse, we moved into a five-bedroom house. One year later,
my grandson came along.
One of my most memorable surprises was when my new daughter-in-
law threw me a surprise birthday party—the first one I ever had. From
that one, every year she would always remember my birthday. She just
loves having a party. I wasn’t just surprised; I was shocked.
So that’s where I am, ten years later, plus another granddaughter that I
helped to raise. They are the smartest kids in the whole wide world.
Remember I told you that I always wanted to be a teacher? Well, here
was my chance. In the mornings, from nine to twelve, I was no longer
Grandma; I was Miss Hart. I would cover my face with my hands and
say, “Grandma just left, now pay attention. Good morning, children.”
Then our lessons would begin—usually math or reading. We had an
hour lunch, then back to class until four.
