Reason To Sing
“Yes certainly, and may I have the number to which you are
calling and your name please?”
She dials as I nervously perch myself on the edge of the
bed. Someone picks up.
“This is the operator. I have a collect call from Kelita. Are
you willing to accept the charges?” I hear his voice. My heart
leaps.
“Yes, operator.”
“Hey it’s me.” I half whisper.
“Kelita? What the …? Where are you?”
“Moosamin, Saskatchewan.”
“How are you calling me? What’s going on?” His voice is
filled with fear.
“We were in an accident last night.”
“Whaaat? Oh no? Oh my God. Are you okay?”
“Yes, I’m okay. Still in shock and a little shaken up. But I
am okay. We’re both okay.”
“Where did you say you were?”
“In the middle of nowhere. At least that’s what it feels
like. Some dinky little town on the edge of the Saskatchewan/
Manitoba border.”
“I’m glad you’re okay. I’m really sorry.” He is sounding more
like himself now.
“The van is totalled. Hudson had to take the Greyhound to
get us a rental, so we can get home.”
“Oh my God, that bad huh?”
“I’m afraid so. I just had to call you and let you know. I
wanted to hear your voice, but more importantly I wanted to
tell you … I have made up my mind”.
Silence.
I go on. “I can’t live like this anymore. I can’t do it.” There. I
said it. I finally said it. And meant it.
