Reason To Sing

                                Chapter Twelve

                       Mommy Comes Home

Vian and I walk alongside Mommy, guiding her down the
hallway into the family room. She is dressed in her new baby
blue nightgown with matching housecoat and slippers. She
looks pretty, but thin. But she is so happy to finally leave her
room. My sister and I tread carefully, so as not to bump the left
side of her body. That’s where her operation was.
“Oh, it feels so good to be out of that bed!” She is smiling.
Or should I say trying to smile. This movement is obviously
causing her some pain. “Thank you, girls. I couldn’t stay there
another minute.” I squeeze her hand gently. “We’re so happy to
finally have you home with us, Mommy. We’ve all missed you
          so much.”
Vian and I did visit her in the hospital, even though we
weren’t supposed to. We would ride our bikes into town and
then find the ledge underneath her hospital room window.
Then we would peek in and wave! Thank goodness it was
          summer.
“Mommy, are you sure you should be out of bed so soon?” I
ask, always playing nursemaid and caregiver.
Sally answers emphatically, “Gosh, yes, girls. This is the
best thing for your mother. Being home with her family and
moving around a bit. She’s got to get her strength back!”
Mommy smiles at the blousy woman helping her to the
couch. “Thank goodness you’ve been here, Sally, to help look
after the girls and make sure everybody is okay.”
Sally is our housekeeper. She’s been living with us ever
