FUTURE RETAILING: ARTIFICIAL
INTELLIGENCE

According to Capgemini, a global leader in consulting,
technology services and digital transformation, in a
2018 report, artificial intelligence is expected to cost
global retailers more than $7 billion per year by the end
of the decade. However, they calculated that $7 billion
investment will result in a $340 billion cost savings in
business operations through automation and efficiency
improvements (Capgemini, 2018).

Accenture, a leading global professional services
company in information technology services and
consulting, predicted in 2016 that retail sales globally
would increase by 38% by the end of 2022. This
increase in sales will result from AI-enabled efficiencies
(Accenture, 2016).
These figures show that AI holds significant promise for
retailers, with a variety of applications that can assist
them in making better business decisions. AI-powered
drones will soon be able to deliver packages weighing
up to five pounds in as little as 30 minutes up to 15 miles
(Jeff Wilke, former CEO of Amazon Worldwide Consumer,
2019). Amazon is already working on determining the
safety and reliability of operations for delivering items,
but there is no set timetable for commercial deployment
of these drones. However, in the coming decade, it is
