shielded from the consequences of circumstances beyond their
control. This is especially true if the business owner purchases
industry-appropriate liability insurance, which usually also
requires that the business be legally registered in order for the
insurance to be properly applied.
So what is the first step to registering your business?
NAMING YOUR BUSINESS
Your business’s name is a big deal. It’s the first thing a customer
encounters when they learn about your business, and it will
create their priceless first impression of you. It may also have
surprising effects, such as affecting the amount of competition
you face to get onto the front page of Internet search results, or
determining how far down an alphabetical directory list your
business appears. There are also terms and words that are wise
to avoid, as many industries are considered high-risk and may
result in a lack of funding opportunities.
When selecting your business name, consider questions like:
Does this name communicate my personality and my
brand’s personality? If people are drawn to your
personality, you want a name that communicates what
that personality is.
Is this name similar to the name of another popular or
local brand? That may be a bad thing; your business
may face a lot of competition for search engine
rankings from that big brand, and customers may
even get confused and buy from that other brand
instead of from you.
Could this brand be off-putting to your customers in
any way? Some businesses find out too late that a term
they used in their name is not viewed as credible or
reputable by their audience.
