Is my business a high-risk industry? Avoid using
terms like credit repair, trucking, real estate,
accounting, cannabis, etc.
Keep these questions in mind as you begin brainstorming
potential names for your business.
It’s a good idea to start with what BigCommerce.com calls a
“word dump.” There are probably hundreds of words that could
be relevant to your brand and industry. Each word sends a
particular message and has a particular personality. Which
words are right for your business name? 1
Try using this checklist to ensure that you get all the juicy
words that might apply to your business out on paper.
Words about what your business does or produces
(cookies, computers, lawn care, etc.).
Words about the experience you want to give your
customers (affordable, bliss, easy, power, premium,
sweet, etc.)
Words about any unique aspects of your business
model (custom, delivery, rental, name of your town or
city if you will serve mostly local customers, etc.).
Words about the people who run your business (your
names, experts, family, geeks, etc.)
Try to come up with a list of at least 100 words to mix, match,
brainstorm, and sleep on. In the morning, come up with six to
twelve names to ask family, friends, and members of your target
customer demographic for their opinions.
Once you have a few favorite names in mind, you will want
to check the following:
Search state records to see if someone is already using
this business name in your state. If they are, you
