example, the status of one of your accounts is listed incorrectly
or, God forbid, your name is spelled wrong, you will want to
compile documents which show your proper account status or a
birth certificate and Social Security card showing the proper
                spelling of your name.
You will want to send copies of the supporting documents—
not the originals!—to the bureau whose report you are disput-
ing. Keep the originals safe in case additional copies may be
                needed in the future.
If negative marks appear on your report, but these are accu-
rate, you will want to turn your attention to settling your debts.
In many cases, it is possible to move delinquent accounts into
good standing within a few months through strategic spending
                and negotiations with your creditors.
Once your accounts are marked as current and in good stand-
ing, you can contact the credit bureau with the mistake to ask
them to remove the negative marks from your obsolete account
                status.
If a credit reporting agency refuses to correct errors on your
report or update it to reflect account status changes, there are
services that can help you get erroneous or fraudulent marks
removed from your credit reports successfully. My own busi-
ness, Major League Credit & Lending, offers such a service. I
sincerely hope you will never need to argue with a credit
reporting agency about errors they refuse to remove from your
report. But if you ever do, we can help.
If you have handled the dispute process to the fullest extent
and appropriate changes still have not been made, you can file a
                                                                       4
complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. This
is the primary organization in charge of ensuring that laws to
protect consumers, including laws about accurate credit report-
                ing, are followed.
If that still fails to produce results, as a last resort, you can file
a lawsuit for violations of Fair Credit Reporting Act statutes. The
National Association of Consumer Advocates may be able to
help you find legal representation for such an endeavor.56
