THE ATTITUDES OF THE HEART
A CONTENTED HEART
The key to ensuring that our hearts are kept from greed is to cultivate
an attitude of contentment. Being content with what we have doesn’t
mean that we quash the desires of our hearts or stop expecting God’s
material blessings. To do so would be contrary to God’s Word that
reveals His heart that we should have more than enough. CONTENTMENT
SIMPLY MEANS THAT WE DON’T ATTEMPT TO RUN AHEAD OF GOD. WE DON’T TRY
TO GET BEFORE GOD GIVES, BECOMING TRAPPED IN AND BURDENED DOWN BY
DEBT—WE DON'T TRY TO CREDIT OUR WAY TO WEALTH! So, contentment then
is a matter of living thankfully within our present means, and allowing
God and the work of our hands (not our credit cards) to give us the
increase.
• Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to
love one another. (Romans 13:8)
• The cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes, and the boasting
of what he has and does, does not come from the Father, but
from the world. (1 John 2:16)
• I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know
what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I
have learned the secret of being content in any and every
situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty
or in want. (Philippians 4:11-12)
• Though the fig tree does not bud, and there are no grapes on
the vine; though the olive crop fails, and the fields produce no
food; though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the
stalls; yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
(Habakkuk 3:17-18)

and be content with such things as you have.”
