THE LIFE OF A TEENAGE GIRL

“So it’s normal? It’s normal for your parents to worry so much
          about you?”

“Um, I guess? I mean, I’ve kinda gotten used to it, but sometimes

          it drives me crazy.”
“Yeah, but everything will be alright. They’ll change, right?”

“Um, I can’t promise you they’ll change, but I’m sure everything
          will be alright.”

I hugged her and kissed her on the forehead.
That was when Mom and Dad stepped into the room. They sat

beside us, their voices steady, as they began to unravel everything they

had been carrying—what worried them, why it weighed so heavily, and
why they believed it should matter to me.

And in that moment, I found myself beginning to understand.

It happened so quickly, like they’d been waiting for a moment like
this to finally talk about it.

“So, you don’t actually wanna be worried?” I asked.
Mom sighed and answered, “No, but… I guess that’s the way

parents show they care, even if it’s over the top.”
So I was right—but now I kind of feel bad.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry I’ve been hard on you guys. I didn’t know

because I didn’t understand. Everyone has been worried about me
because I might die and stuff.”

               They all nodded.
               “But… why? I’m fine, though. And I don’t think I’ll die yet,” I

          added.
