SICK DAHLIA

“Well, we don’t know for sure if you are gonna die—just maybe…
we don’t know how long you’ll last in this world. But having fun with

you, and protecting you, is what we should be doing together,” Mom

          smiled.
Olivia got up and started jumping happily. “When you mean

‘having fun together,’ does that mean we can go to Disney World?!”
“Uh, I’m not sure—” Dad started, but Mom interrupted him and

          said,
“Actually, yeah, we can. We’re gonna have fun… as a family, with

          no worries.”

She winked at Dad, and for the first time in what felt like forever,
happiness settled over me—without stress, without sadness, without

worry attaching itself to me from every side.
And in that moment, surrounded by my family, I felt a closeness I

had never known before. Maybe I had never understood it in the past,
but sitting there, I finally did.
