CHAPTER 2

ut when the bell rang, everybody headed out quickly. I never

realized people cared so much about their next classes—but
since it’s the last week, they do.

“Wow, a lot of people really are going to enjoy summer break
soon…” Jess said, stretching her arms over her head as we walked.

I didn’t think she meant to bring up summer break so quickly, since

the bell hadn’t even rung for us to go home yet.
“So?” I replied, adjusting the strap of my bag.

“You know I have a bunch of Zoom classes and assignments to
finish, right?” she added, pulling out her phone to double-check

          something.

“Yeah?” Celia asked, glancing over Jess’s shoulder.
“Well, the file got deleted,” she groaned, “and now my professor

doubled the work. I might not even get to enjoy the break.”
“You still can,” I said, stepping around a backpack someone had

left in the middle of the hall. “I mean, summer’s like three months long.
I doubt you’re gonna spend all of it locked in your room doing

          assignments.”

“Exactly,” Celia added, nudging her with a grin. “And we’re your
best friends. We’re not about to let you have a miserable break, trust

          me.”
