SHAUNA’S STAND–UP

               I sighed. “I’m not ignoring you—well, I’m not trying to, but…”
“But what?” Martin looked at me curiously.

“My parents know about the comedy club, and now they won’t

allow me to do comedy again.”
“What?! You told them?” Dietra raised her eyebrows.

“I had to! If not, they would’ve made me do school learning
classes. And I don’t want to—but now my comedy life is ruined.” I

frowned and looked down. Martin put his palm over my hand, feeling
          bad.

               “I’m sorry,” he muttered.

“No, don’t be,” Dietra said. “Because your comedy life isn’t
ruined, Shauna. It isn’t over yet.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, looking back up.
“Your parents may force you to stop comedy jokes and stuff, but

did they tell you to stop going to the club?”
               “Uh… no, not really.”

“Well, at least that’s something—you can still do comedy there.”

          She shrugged nonchalantly.
“But they specifically told me not to do anything with comedy in

          it.”

“Oh, c’mon, Shauna. We know how much you want to be a
comedian, and your parents can’t stop you from it just like that. At least

just one week in the comedy club.” She sat beside me, squeezing me
          until I gave in.
