CHAPTER TWELVE





          I
                was always so lonely and never had any friends.
               So, out of loneliness, one Sunday I was at Hope

               Gardens,  just  walking  around,  when  this  young

          man came up to me and said, “Hey, good-looking —
          looks  like  you  could  use  a  friend.”  And  with  those

          words, that's how my other life started.

          We sat down and talked, sharing stories. In a way, our

          stories  sounded  similar  —  a  stepson  not  loved  by  a
          stepfather and being abused by him, so he left and lived

          on his own. That reminded me of my own life. The only
          difference  was  that  I  didn't  have  the  courage  or  the

          means to go out on my own. But that was all we had in

          common.

          After hours of talking, we said goodbye with a promise

          to meet again. The second time, I told him of my little
          girl, who by this time was a little over a year old. He

          was very civilised about it. He took me to see where he
