In the book of Numbers 19:15, we read: “And every open vessel, which
has no covering fastened upon it, is unclean.” (KJV)
When we neglect our relationship with Christ, we end up with a weak
connection to the One who is our absolute life source and lose the
strength of His covering. This, in turn, opens us up to adverse worldly
influences that war against our souls and negatively impact the
sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit within us.
The Lord is jealous for us and wants us to desire Him first and foremost
in our lives. This is not only for His delight and benefit, but also
because He knows that only when we constantly draw near to God will
we be assured of our spiritual safety, security, survival, and growth.
As I meditated further on verse 12, I was reminded of the story of
Goshen. This, too, was like a garden enclosed and barred to the outside
world. Let me explain...
Some of you may be familiar with this word, as it refers to an actual
location mentioned in the Bible. Firstly, in Genesis 45:10 (NKJV):
“You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near to me—
you and your children, your children’s children, your flocks and your
herds, and all that you have.”
These were words spoken by Joseph after the Lord, in His kindness,
had reunited Joseph’s family in Egypt. He invited them to join him—
to live under his care in this foreign land—because there was a severe
