daughters of God, require both discernment and wisdom regarding the
“gushing forth” of our fountains of living water. Notice how the spring
is shut, and the fountain sealed.
Romans 8:14 (ESV) says:
“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”
We are not to be like leaking water pipes, from which water flows
unchecked, but are to follow Jesus’ example in ministry. His words and
actions were led by the Holy Spirit and by what his heavenly Father
was doing. Similarly, our heavenly Bridegroom wants us sealed, so that
not one drop will escape without His direction. It is His deposit of living
water within us, and because the flow emanates from Him, it is
perfectly pure—without the pollution that comes from fleshly zeal and
pride.
Verses 13–15 describe the now-emerging fruitfulness and power of the
Shulamite. Firstly, she is likened to an orchard of pomegranates;
secondly, to precious, exotic plants and spices; and thirdly, to a
fountain, a well, and streams of living water.
Earlier on in this chapter, back in verse 3, the Bridegroom-King refers
to the cheeks on her face as pomegranates. I explained how this fruit
has a tough outer skin, which is bitter to the taste—but once cut open,
it is full of juicy, sweet seeds. As part of our journey to Christian
maturity, we will be led to enter into many (hence the use of the word
“orchard”) bitter experiences in our lives.
