              Topic 15: Water tower

              Training aim

To train students in how to carry out a fire attack on a multi-storey
              building using the aerial appliance.

              Resources

              • appliance

              • tower

                      CONTENT TO COVER

              Recap

Recap main points from previous session.

              Water tower

              Cover the following:

              • indiscriminate monitor use can:

                    – push fire into crews working in the building

                    – weight of water can weaken the building

                    – jet impact and water weight can dislodge the building

              • monitor use – large outputs can easily deplete water mains

              • monitor – use only on the instruction of the IC

              • exposure to radiant heat or direct flame contact

              • falling debris

              • climatic conditions at the head of the aerial for operators

              • aerial head out of sight from ground control

              • wind direction/speed

              • maximum cage load reduced when used as a water tower

              • jet reaction at the head of the ladder – depress the aerial head by
approximately 1 m for jet reaction.
