Chapter 24
The Watcher is waiting. He is wondering if this is the last he
will ever see of Nanosh. Once the feds arrive, they will know
who she is and who she is working for. Her look, the way the
accident was run, the use of the property of prominent first
generation Russian-Americans for the operation all adds up. It
will be impossible for them to ignore. She will be taken into
custody, then probably deported. As near as he can tell, she
has failed her mission. The Russians do not accept failure,
especially because she allowed a target to get close to her. She
will be dealt with most harshly. Perhaps if he is careful, he can
save her. First things first, though. There's a convoy of large
vehicles on the highway speeding along in formation just a few
miles off. It will take only a few minutes and then it will be
over. He had to face it, he was jealous. He did not like seeing
Steve being intimate with Nanosh. It ruined his fantasy that
only he was good enough for her, after all, he was the only spy
in the world regularly considered better than she was. He had
only a few minutes to decide what to do.
Trash and Linda return to the lounge to see Steve sitting
nervously on the couch while Nanosh paced back and forth
with a concerned expression.
