development of anesthesia discipline and the building of a talented team. He recommended Prof.
Bang-xiong Zeng as director of the Department of Anesthesiology, Wuhan Union Hospital
(Figure 4). Later Prof. Bang-xiong Zeng held the position as vice chairman of the Chinese
Society of Anesthesiology and Chairman of Anesthesia Branch of Hubei Medical Association.

Meanwhile, as a member of the editorial board for the Chinese Journal of Anesthesiology
and standing member of the Journal of Clinical Anesthesiology editorial board, Prof. Liu
recommended young and middle-aged in the department to join the editorial boards of
professional journals. In the process of editing “Modern Anesthesiology”, he focused on
cultivating the youth. He invited the youth in the Department of Anesthesiology to edit this book
while organizing famous experts all over the country to write this book.

From Prof. Shang-long Yao’s viewpoint, Prof. Liu was strict with academic research,
himself, and his students. Behind his strictness, it embodies his responsibility and expectations as
a teacher. After Shang-long Yao graduated and worked in the Department of Anesthesiology of
Wuhan Union Hospital, Prof. Liu introduced him to the experts and professors all over the
country and supported and encouraged him to participate in all kinds of academic activities.
Under the careful cultivation of Prof. Liu, Prof. Shang-long Yao served as vice director of
Wuhan Union Hospital, director of the anesthesiology department of Wuhan Union Hospital,
chairman of Wuhan Pain Society, chairman of Hubei Association of Anesthesiology, and
chairman of Chinese Association of Anesthesiology.

For decades, Prof. Liu has cultivated a large number of talents for our country. Presently,
many of his students not only become the backbones of the Department of Anesthesiology in
several Chinese hospitals, some of them even have reached out to the world. Prof. Liu won the
Life Achievement Award for anesthesiologists by the Chinese Association of Anesthesiology in
2011, which indicated full recognition in his outstanding contribution to the establishment and
development of Anesthesiology.
