ABSTRACT

The invention of ancient anesthesia originated in China, and application is a result of
accumulated experiences. In recent decades, modern anesthesia has rapidly developed in China.
Central China has become one of the most vibrant through centers in the rapid advancement of
anesthesiology. In particular, two hospitals, Wuhan Tongji Hospital and Wuhan Union Hospital,
have played a significant roles. Over the past hundred years, Wuhan Tongji Hospital and Wuhan
Union Hospital have won a worldwide reputation for their remarkable ability to provide a full
range of medical services and concrete technical strength. Professors Shi-ao Jin of Wuhan Tongji
Hospital and Jun-jie Liu from Wuhan Union Hospital have made a selfless and remarkable
contribution to the establishment and development of Anesthesiology in both Hubei province as
well as greater China. Their lifetime of dedication to clinical practice, education, management,
and academic research is a sentinel contribution to the history of anesthesia in China. Their noble
personal pursuit, graceful life attitude, and pioneering contribution to the development of
Anesthesiology make both men models of excellence in research within the academic
community. As distinguished scientists, they embody the great strength of science and fully
demonstrate the charm of personality. Their impact and influence are measured not only by the
accomplishments listed on lengthy curriculum vitae but also by the number of lives they touched
as an educator, as a philosopher, and as mentors.

Biography of professor Shi-ao Jin

Tongji Hospital was initially founded by a German Doctor, Erich Paulun, in Shanghai in
1900 and moved to Wuhan in 1955. And then Tongji Hospital affiliated with Tongji Medical
College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, has become an innovation-oriented
modern hospital incorporating medical treatment, teaching, and scientific research. The marriage
of talented and famous doctors with teaching strength, and intense scientific research set the
catalyst for innovation. It has cultivated twelve academicians, three vice ministers, ministers of
the Ministry of Health, and numerous Chinese medical community talents. Academician Fa-zu
Qiu is an outstanding representative, and his demeanor is hailed as an immortal monument in
medical history.
