Prof. Shi-ao Jin founded the department of Anesthesiology, Tongji Hospital Affiliated to
Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology on June 1956. It’s the
earliest Department of Anesthesiology ever established in Hubei Province and one of the earliest
solo anesthesiology departments ever found in China. After several generation’s efforts, the
Department of Anesthesiology, Tongji Hospital Affiliated to Tongji Medical College, Huazhong
University of Science and Technology, has become a critical national discipline with vital
clinical, scientific research, teaching, and training strength.

Professor Shi-ao Jin was born in October 1923 in Chuzhou City, Anhui Province, China. He
graduated from the School of Medicine, Tongji University in Shanghai in 1949 and received
favorable basic clinical skill training at the Department of Surgery, Nanjing Central Hospital. In
1950, he returned to Tongji Hospital in Shanghai and began his remarkable career in anesthesia.
From 1952 to 1953, he studied at Zhongshan Hospital in Shanghai with Prof. Jue Wu, the
founder of anesthesiology, and laid the foundation of clinical anesthesiology. In late 1954, Prof.
Jin moved to Wuhan City, Hubei Province, and established one of the earliest independent
anesthesiology department, the department of Anesthesiology, Wuhan Tongji Hospital.

Prof. Jin (Figure 1) is a tireless leader and scholar. In August 1979, the second national
academic conference regarding anesthesiology was held in Harbin. At this conference, the
Chinese Society of Anesthesiology was founded, and Prof. Jin was elected as a member of the
Standing Committee. The report named “Anesthesia management of orthotopic liver
transplantation” given by Prof. Jin at the conference aroused great interest among all the
representatives because perioperative management of orthotopic liver transplantation embodies
the level and quality of anesthesia duo to its complexity and difficulty. In 1980, Prof. Jin
summarized the anesthesia management experiences of orthotopic liver transplantation and wrote
the paper in German and English, published in Anesthetist. This paper is the first anesthesiology
literature in mainland China included in SCI (Science Citation Index) in full text.

Prof. Jin had a persistent academic pursuit, and paid close
attention to the development of Anesthesiology in China. Early in
1953, he started the training course for anesthesiologists at Tongji
Hospital. Since Tongji Hospital was moved to Wuhan in 1955, the
training course has cultivated many anesthesiology professionals
for South Central China. Professor Jin was respectively approved
as a postgraduate tutor and doctoral supervisor in 1978 and 1984.
For years, he has cultivated a significant number of talents in
anesthesiology. Ning Miao studied for masters and doctoral
degrees under the supervision of Prof. Jin from 1981 to 1987 and
she is the first doctoral student of Anesthesiology cultivated in Professor Shi-ao Jin
               mainland China.

Prof. Jin devoted much effort to establishing Anesthesiology and participated in making
important decisions regarding the discipline. In August 1990, he discussed in Yunyang Medical
College about founding the first five-year undergraduate program in Anesthesiology in Central
China. In June 1991, he inspected the construction of the Department of Anesthesiology at
Xuzhou Medical College. Prof. Jin has always made ongoing efforts to set up an Anesthesiology
specialty independently. Academicians Fa-zu Qiu and Meng-chao Wu accepted his viewpoints.
