Prof. Jin has devoted all his efforts, intelligence, and wisdom to Anesthesiology in China.
He has done work actively and made a selfless contribution in his post and is recognized as a
pioneer and expert in the discipline. Given his outstanding performance in the anesthesia
practice, research and education, he enjoyed special government allowances since 1993. Prof. Jin
won the Life Achievement Award for anesthesiologists by the Chinese Association of
Anesthesiology in 2010, which fully recognized his remarkable contribution to the establishment
and development of Anesthesiology.
Biography of professor Jun-jie Liu
Wuhan Union Hospital was founded in 1866 and is now a major comprehensive hospital
under the Ministry of Health jurisdiction. One hundred fifty years ago, Mr. Griffith John, a
Swansea-born great gentleman, came to China and set up a hospital (predecessor of Wuhan
Union Hospital) to help patients in China. He, along with some British Doctors, introduced and
spread modern medicine in Wuhan, China. Wuhan Union Hospital was among the first “Class-A
Hospitals” recognized by the Ministry of Health and China’s TOP 100 Hospitals. Affiliated with
Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the hospital
comprises the First Clinical College of Tongji Medical College, Hubei Emergency Center, Hubei
Telemedicine Center, and Research Center for Postgraduate Medical Education, etc.
Department of Anesthesiology, Union Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College,
Huazhong University of Science and Technology has a long history. It is now a first-class center
for clinical, teaching, and scientific research in anesthesia both at home and abroad. In 1890,
chloroform anesthesia was adopted amd performed in 630 operations. In 1934, hexobarbitone
sodium was first successfully applied to intravenous anesthesia, which came up to advanced
world standards. Two unigue forms of regional anesthesia were performed as well in the same
year. In 1955, Prof. Jun-jie Liu, a famous anesthesiologist, the winner of the Life Achievement
Award for anesthesiologists by the Chinese Association of Anesthesiology, pioneered
anesthesiology in Wuhan Union Hospital.
Professor Jun-jie Liu was born in a literary family in Gedian Town, Wuhan, Hubei Province,
on March 15th, 1922. In 1939, he studied at No. 12 State Secondary School in Changshou,
Sichuan Province. After witnessing Chinese compatriots suffering from cold, hunger, and illness,
he gradually developed his ideal to become a doctor and save people’s lives. After graduation
from high school in 1942, Professor Jun-jie Liu (Figure 3) enrolled in the School of Medicine,
National Central University (now is Nanjing University). In 1948, he returned to his hometown
Wuhan after his graduation. In 1950, the Korean War broke out, he resolutely signed up for the
medical team of Resisting U.S. aggression and aid Korea.
