“I see an adventure in your future. It’s a business venture, but it’s more exciting than that. It will be an adventure for you. It will involve pick-up and delivery with small trucks.”
I didn’t pay much attention to that input as it had nothing to do with what I was doing. I had left pick-up and delivery behind me at UPS.
At least I thought so.
No such thing as coincidence
Six months after meeting with the psychic, I boarded an airplane in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to go back to a consulting job in Pennsylvania and went to my assigned seat.
Whoa. As I sat down the guy I was seated next to was my previous boss, Roger Frock, from A. T. Kearney, the New York City consulting firm.
We laughed at the coincidence. It had been about two years since we’d seen each other. I asked if he was still with Kearney and he said no. He had left to join a start-up company named Federal Express as general manager.
He went on to explain that Federal Express was a new company that wanted to provide an overnight pick-up and delivery service using the UPS hub concept, but with airplanes instead of trucks.
Then he said:
“We’re looking for a Senior Vice President of Sales and Customer Service. With your UPS background, do you know anyone whom we might talk with?”
I thought for a moment and said, “Yes. Me.”
We talked for a while and then he invited me to come to Little Rock, Arkansas to interview with the company founder, Frederick W. Smith.
Long story short, I spent the next ten years at FedEx in Memphis, Tennessee, starting seven months before we began operations and leaving after we were the first company in the United States to hit $1 billion in sales in their first ten years.
