On the fifth morning of the hike up Kilimanjaro, Jason was very tired and needed to go down the mountain. Both Jason and Sandra believed that he had altitude sickness and would be fine once he was at a lower altitude.
He wanted his Mom to continue up with the rest of the group, saying that he would wait for her because he knew that she would be last down... teasing Sandra because she hikes at a slow pace.
Two days later, Sandra and the other hikers summited Kilimanjaro. When they came off the mountain, Sandra was informed by the Tanzanian Police that Jason was dead. He had succumbed to High Altitude Pulmonary Edema.
The detail of how or why he died is not important here. What is important is the tremendous amount of pain and guilt Sandra felt as a mother.
It is clear to me that when most people experience such deep pain, they go into an emotional shell that in most cases makes them unavailable emotionally. They gradually build bigger and stronger walls between them and the others in their life.
The role of intuition
Sandra credits her intuition as guiding her through five years of intensive effort to get back to normal
