TIFILI (Tag It, Feel It, Love It)
For those, like me, who are emotionally void some or all of the time, this is a great exercise. We are like a boat at night without lights seeking a harbor. We get a slight tinge of emotion and now need to explode it into a full fledged feeling.
So, when you feel something either positive or negative, Tag It. Feel something.
Then Feel It as deeply as possible. If it is painful, feel the pain. You can’t experience joy if you can’t experience pain. The worst thing that we do to ourselves is bury the pain trying to rationalize it out of our experience. I have learned that is not possible. You will come back to it or you will get tense or eat too much or enact any number of behaviors.
Finally Love It. No matter how painful or how joyful, love it. If it is painful, look for the message. See it simply as a gas gauge on your car. It is giving you a message. Listen to it and love it for the message it brings.
As Oprah Winfree says: “True forgiveness is when you can say to someone who has hurt you deeply. I love you for the message you gave me.”
