The uncertainty and risks are much higher in entrepreneurial ventures while at the same time critical information is often not available.
Chapter 5 profiles Arjun Gupta, venture capitalist and David Leppert, marijuana farmer, both very successful repeat entrepreneurs. The Chapter covers their view of intuition and its importance in their decision making process.
Summarizing Gupta and Leppert
Both Gupta and Leppert assert the importance of intuitive decision making. Arjun when facing his team of highly analytical people, often reverses his team’s recommendations based on the “facts.”
David relies on intuition in the very new industry of professional (and legal) marijuana farming. This budding industry is fraught with uncertainty – constantly changing state and local laws and regulations along with the usual vagaries of farming.
As David says: “The foggier the horizons, the more intuition is essential to success.” He calls marijuana farming entrepreneur squared.
Another experimental protocol (Gillin, Atkinson, Bradley, & McCraty, 2006) is designed to measure intuition specifically in business entrepreneurship.
