Pregnancy Induced Hypertension



                                       Pre-eclampsia & Eclampsia



                   Definition: It is a specific condition, which occurs, only in the human

                   female during pregnancy. It is characterized by hypertension, edema and /

                   or proteinuria. It occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy. If untreated it may

                   end in eclampsia.



                   Incidence:5 % to 7 % of all pregnant women will develop preeclampsia.

                   Classification of hypertensive states of pregnancy:-

                    Gestational hypertensive

                    disorders:-
                                                            •  Hypertension after 20 weeks of

                    •  Gestational hypertension                gestation in normotensive patient

                                                               without proteinuria

                                                            •  Proteinuria after 20 weeks of
                    •  Gestational proteinuria
                                                               gestation        in       previously

                                                               nonproteinuric patient without

                                                               hypertension
                    •  Preeclampsia
                                                            •  Hypertension & proteinuria  in

                                                               previously normotensive patient
