Art Teachers Energize Skills in Mountains
Several BPS art teachers spent a week at
the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN. Nestled in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, the school provides opportunities for its students to immerse themselves in art-making, learning new techniques, and exploring new art media. Arrowmont has been around more than a hundred years and offers over 130 courses in arts and crafts. Scholarships were provided to BPS teachers by Community Foundation for Brevard.

Columbia Elementary in Palm Bay’s art teacher, Kristina Latraverse, also attended an Arrowmont summer workshop. “My time at Arrowmont allowed me to reconnect with my own art making and explore new creative processes. I am so excited to share what I have learned and the experience I had with my students,” she said. “Spending a week being a student gave me a unique perceptive which I know will improve my teaching practice.”
Jim Finch, West Shore Jr/Sr High’s art teacher said, “I was in the studio every day till midnight and couldn’t wait to start over the next day. I enjoyed every aspect: the food, lodging, making new friends, learning new techniques, taking risks. This was a life changing experience for me; art-making every day in an environment that truly facilitated creativity.”
Cambridge Elementary art teacher, Amanda Shaw worked on a mixed media project at Arrowmont.
Amanda Shaw, visual arts teacher at Cambridge Elementary
in Cocoa said, “The scholarship opportunity I received for
a painting and mixed media workshop at Arrowmont was by far one of the most rewarding life experiences I’ve ever had.
I can’t wait
