Real Superintendents Wear Pink
Fashion design students from Satellite, Viera, Palm Bay Magnet and Rockledge High Schools present Superintendent Mullins with their pink tie creations.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Brevard Schools Su- perintendent Mark Mullins is no stranger to the disease. His mother is a 40-year breast cancer survivor.
“As a middle school student when my mom shared she had breast can- cer, I clearly recall the fear and uncertainty that came with that reality,” said Dr. Mullins. “I am fortunate to continue having my mother with me today, but there are many who have not had my families’ same fortune.”
Dr. Mullins joined with other Brevard County community leaders to raise money in support of the American Cancer Society as part of the Real Men Wear Pink campaign.
As part of the campaign, Dr. Mullins vowed to wear a different pink tie Monday through Friday, the entire month of October, with the goal of raising a minimum of $2,500. Not owning any pink ties, however, pre- sented a slight problem, so he enlisted the help of some talented BPS students to help expand his wardrobe horizons.
Fashion design students from Satellite, Viera, Palm Bay Magnet and Rockledge High Schools had free reign to create any style of ties they wanted, and they did not disappoint! Designs ranged from solid ties in all shades of pink, to gingham and floral patterns, and those with positive messages such as, “Fight Like a Girl,” “Hope” and “Take Stock.” There was even a custom made tie embroidered with Brevard Public Schools and a hot pink bowtie. In all, students made 26 retail-worthy ties, enough to outfit Dr. Mullins for nearly every day in October, including weekends.
Each one-of-a-kind tie is given to the indivi- dual or organization with the largest donation for that day. Every dollar raised will help the American Cancer Society save lives from breast cancer through early detection and prevention, innovative breast cancer research, and patient support. The Real Men Wear Pink campaign runs through October 31st.
“We all benefit from the tenacious cancer research that is possible through this funding which will one day, we all trust soon, be able to completely remove the fear and devastation that cancer brings to our lives,” said Dr. Mullins. “I
am proud to ‘wear pink’ and have an opportunity to contribute to a cau- se that works tirelessly to educate and promote early detection oppor- tunities for men and women, our moms, dads, brothers and sisters.”
