BPS Works to Get Out the ‘School Vote’
By: Matt Reed, BPS News
Brevard Public Schools has pushed to get out the “school vote” this election year by helping students register to vote and making it easier for faculty and staff to cast their ballots.
BPS has not endorsed any candidates or positions, but believes people who work in and attend our schools should have a voice on the issues. Three school-board positions are up for election (including two open seats), as are several seats for state senator and representa- tive – positions that control school taxes and funding.
Student Registrations
BPS and the Brevard County Supervisor of Elections teamed up in
a nonpartisan effort to get students registered to vote. Principals organized registration tables and activities at high schools. Every
BPS student who was at least 18, but not yet listed on the voter rolls received a postcard at school with information on how to register. As of October 12, those efforts had contributed to an “impressive” 1,357 students ages 16-18 either pre-registering or registering to vote, the Brevard supervisor’s office says.
Time for Staff on Election Day
BPS and the Brevard Federation of Teachers agreed on letting faculty and staff leave schools at the same time students depart
