   LIFE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT FOR PHU TAI CHILDREN AND YOUTH BY USING
COMMUNITY CAPITAL TO PREVENT DRUG ADDICTION: A CASE STUDY OF
NONG CHANG COMMUNITY, SAM CHAI DISTRICT, KALASIN PROVINCE

Abstract
The objectives of this research were: 1) to study the level of life skills necessary for the prevention of drug addiction of Phu Tai children and youth of Nong Chang community, 2) to study community capital to build life skills for Phu Tai children and youth of Nong Chang community, 3) to propose guidelines for the development of life skills for Phu Tai children and youth by using community capitals to prevent drug addiction. This study employed research mixed methods. The research area was a Phu Tai community (Nong Chang community). The key informants were 32 people including community leaders, nurses from the district health promotion hospital, subdistrict administrative organization staff, public health volunteers, local scholars, monks, policeman, guardians, teachers, and children and youth. These informants were selected using the purposive sampling. In addition, 210 children were also selected to be the samples by using a cluster sampling. In the analysis of the data, the descriptive analysis and content analysis were employed.
The results showed that the children and youth possessed a good level of life skills. Self-control skills, self–worth skills, refusal skills, and decision-making skills were in a good level, and problem-solving skills were moderate. Community capitals to enhancing life skills for Phu Tai children and youth of the Nong Chang community consisted of network capital/ human capital, institutional capital, cultural and traditional capital, and local wisdom. Guidelines for developing life skills for Phu Tai children and youth suitable of the Nong Chang community and can be further extended to develop the community in a concrete manner, consisting of; (1) Life skills development for Phu Tai children and youth through the integration of network capital/ human capital (2) Life skills development for Phu Tai children and youth by integrating cultural capital, tradition, and local wisdom (3) Life skills development for Phu Tai children and youth by integrating institutional capital (4) Life skills development for Phu Tai children and youth by integrating institutional capital and human capital (5) Life skills development for Phu Tai children and youth using community participation. In addition, legal measures and learning processes are applied to develop the life skills of Phu Tai children and youth to prevent drug addiction.
