Rationale
The district is interested in the following:
• Increasing the academic performance of 9 grade students in math, specifically in Algebra I,
th
Geometry and Algebra II.
• Increasing the number of freshmen on track to graduate.
• Seeking a solution to the problem of students being in double dose classes.
• Freeing up freshmen schedules to provide room for more electives and to meet the new
graduation requirements for the Class of 2020.
• Aligning instructional practices with best practices and other national models
District Goal & Target Alignment
1. Develop a clear focus on students and on the quality of experiences and supports provided
to students.
2. Ensure that quality teaching and learning is supported in a climate and culture of trust and
positive relationships.
3. By 2020, greater than 84% of students will achieve expected or higher than expected growth
on the College Board Suite of Assessments Spring Assessment by increasing student math
fluency, conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts, and the ability to apply
knowledge towards solving problems.
Duration
The pilot will last for two years.
Control Group
Students with similar math scores will be placed in a section of Pre-AP Algebra I and Math
Foundations. The number of control groups will be determined based on student placement data.
Treatment Group
The treatment group will have the students with the identified cut scores. The number of treatment
groups will be determined based on student placement data.
