Heidi collected more silverware the following day when she was
picked out the Continental Inter-breed Champion.
The following week it was back down to Royal Cornwall Show
where the standard and numbers of entries just keeps getting
better and better each year. The judge this year was Richard
Sharp of the Belvior View Flock. After some big classes he
awarded the champion to Ben and Jess Collings’ shearling ewe,
Matt’s Hula Hoops. Amy Payne’s aged ram, Beckbred Flyer, took
Reserve Champion for the second year in a row.
The one-day summer shows went from July to September, all
well supported but sadly the weather didn’t get the summer bit
with rain and more rain. Thank you to everyone who braved the
wet and mud to support their local shows. Waterproofs was
definitely the fashion this year.
Finally a big well done to all the young handlers over the show
season with many of them picking up first prizes at most of the
shows. I can see in a few years time they will be easily beating
us adults.
SALES
NSA Exeter
Entries for this year sale saw more females forward which was
in demand.
Taking top price of 700gns was the Champion of the show the
evening before, Swelle Harlem from Tracey Cobbledick. He went
home to his new home in Wimborne, Dorset, with W Wrixon to
go on his commercial flock.
Reserve Champion went to the shearling ewe. Fingle Honestly
from Louise Elworthy. She made 500gns and went home with
bulk buyer J Hurford of Axminster.
The Reserve Female ticket also went to Louise with Fingle
Hobnob, she sold for 350gns and joins new upcoming breeder
Heidi Rose of Sidmouth. Reserve Male went to Fingle
Headhunter.
Thank you to Margaret Heard of the Maundown Flock for
judging the show. Trade for the males was a bit sticky with one
or two sadly not making their reserves and going home again
but demand for females was good and I think we could handle
bigger female numbers as we have a few new breeders looking
to increase their flock numbers.
FAT LAMBS / PRIMESTOCK SHOWS
The annual fat lamb show/sale at Exeter was held in June with
a nice number of entries and in the pair classes first went to
Margaret Heard who claimed the top price per kg of the day of
345p at 42kg and £145 to buyer West Scottish lamb of Carlisle.
Second place went to Heidi Rose 46kg, £140 to Euro Quality
lamb, and third place to David Churchill 43kg £134 to DW
livestock.
The primestock shows this year has seen some outstanding
lambs on show and record prices smashed on more than one
occasion. Agrifest kicked off the main primestock shows with
Robert Garth and Sarah Priestly making their annual trip down
to claim the Supreme Champion and Reserve titles. The
