Department of Shipping and
Transportation Management
Department Introduction
The Department of Shipping and Transportation Management (STM) has established nearly 30 years since 1991. She
originally belonged to the College of Management, National Kaohsiung Marine University. After the National Kaohsiung
University of Science and Technology (NKUST) established and merged from three Universities in Kaohsiung, including
the Kaohsiung Marine University, the Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology, and the Kaohsiung
University of Applied Sciences on Feb 1, 2018, the STM is belonging to College of Marine Commerce, NKUST. The
establishment of the department is to develop the student's professional skills with an emphasis on shipping, logistics
management, and international trade to transportation industry. Now, there are four programs in the department, namely,
Undergraduate Program in the daytime and evening, Graduate Program, EMBA Program, and Ph.D. Program. Currently,
about 600 students enrolled in this department. Over 90% of our professors possess a Ph.D. This may ensure high quality
instruction in teachings.
The Aims of Education
The aim of education is to developing student's professional, conscientious, and agreeable skills with an emphasis on
shipping and logistics management to transportation industry. The providing of highly qualified and transportation and
logistics talents can help country to increase its global competitiveness. Our teachings focus on practical trainings,
including Marine Transportation Management, Air Transportation Management and International Logistics, Information
Technology and Business English.

Career Directions
The department has built long term relationships with various successful Taiwanese businesses. Students thus have
opportunities to participate in a co-operative education program with these businesses in order to enrich their learning. If
the students perform well in these companies, there is potential for employment upon completion of the program. The main
employment paths of our graduate students include: Shipping Companies, Shipping Agents, Freight Forwarders, Trading
Companies, International Logistics, Industry Insurance Companies, Express Transportation Companies, and Container
Businesses. Further, students also have opportunities to enter Marine and Custom's Public department by admission
examinations. In addition, upon completion of the undergraduate program, students are encouraged to continue their study
into the graduate program to further develop their skills.
