Department of Civil Engineering

         Introduction

The department was established in 1963, first offering a 5-year junior college program. After the development over these
years, the department now offers Bachelor’s degree, Master degree and Ph.D. degree programs. With over 10,000 alumni
in Taiwan and overseas, the department has earned a very good reputation in both the academia and the industry.
The department aims to offer the students with fundamental knowledge in civil engineering and also emphasizes on
interdisciplinary research, such as collaborating with computer engineering, material science, remote sensing technology,
project management, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. The students are trained to apply their knowledge
to take on various challenges in the broad filed of civil engineering. Our goal is to educate and train the students to meet
the current and future needs of the construction industry so that they can make contributions to the industry and the society.

         Programs
The department currently has 25 experienced faculty members and 24 of them have doctoral degrees. One-third of our
faculty members are registered professional Civil Engineers either in Taiwan or overseas.
For full-time programs, the department currently offers Ph. D., Master of Science, Bachelor of Science, and five-year
junior college programs. The total amount of student enrollment is around 900. For part-time students, the department
offers night and weekend programs, including the Master of Engineering program and two-year Bachelor of Engineering
programs. The total part-time student enrollment is about 250.

         Research Topics

The faculty members are very active in research and their research topics cover many fields in the Civil Engineering
discipline, such as Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials, Transportation Engineering,
Construction Management, Information Technology, BIM, Water Resource, Sensing Technology and Survey. Also, the
faculty member work closely with industry and bridge the gap between academy and industry. Some faculty members also
provide consulting services to both public and private sectors. Also, our faculty members also offer technical supports for
international projects (such as Phase 2 of Delhi Metro in India, Phase 1 of N- S Line of Jakarta MRT in Indonesia and
some other projects in the Southeast Asia region). In addition to summer internship, the department also encourages
students to participate in the semester or full-year internship. By doing so, the students are able to learn more practical
skills and develop good working ethics for his/her future career. Further, the department also emphasizes on other aspects
of student training, such as pre-training for government’s civil servant, professional engineer and working overseas. The
department provides a good environment for the students to develop themselves and be able to pursue their dreams. Many
of our alumni are very successful in both private and public sectors.

The department also admits students from overseas (such as India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia) and offers English
courses for these students. Most of the overseas students are enrolled in the graduate programs and pursuing a M.S. or
Ph.D. degree. Most graduates return to their home countries and are very successful in different disciplines, such as
research centers, universities, consulting firms and construction companies.
