Department of Safety,
Health and Environmental Engineering
Introduction
The Department of Safety, Health and Environmental Engineering was established in 1997. The mission of the
department is to achieve significant advancement in teaching and researches, thus allowing fostering
knowledgeable and well-trained professionals within the expanded scope of safety, health or environmental
engineering. It is also the department’s goal to prepare the students with the ability to identify, formulate and
contribute resilient and sustainable solutions to various engineering challenges in the world, today and
tomorrow. The department provides supportive learning environment to the students through classrooms,
laboratories, design projects, research projects, as well as field internships.
Programs
The department currently offers Bachelor of Science Program and Master of Science Program in Safety,
Health and Environmental Engineering, and all the programs are fully accredited by IEET. The department
also offers advanced study for degree in Doctoral Program at the Graduate Institute of Engineering Science
and Technology. The department welcomes enrollment of international students for academic degrees or non-
degree programs. Average annual enrollment at the department are:
Undergraduate: 430 students
Graduate (master program): 158 students
Research Topic
The Department of Safety, Health and Environmental Engineering performs in-
depth and state-of-the-art researches into engineering progress. The department is a
leader in the professional and academic advancement of engineering education,
aiming to teach, conduct research, and serve the community through professional
development and technology transfer. The department is dedicated to the studies of
five strategic challenge areas, including:
1.Pollution Prevention and Control: water/wastewater treatment design; air pollution
and noise control; waste treatment and reuse; groundwater and soil remediation;
green chemistry and clean production; environmental planning and management.
2.Safety Engineering: mechanical safety; chemical and process safety; fire safety
engineering; disaster management and emergency response; safe construction
technology.
3.Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health: exposure and risk assessment; hazard
identification; industrial and environmental toxicology; occupational and
environmental epidemiology; molecular epidemiology.
4.Biotechnology: environmental biotechnology; bioenergy technology; biological
monitoring; reproductive hazard assessment; biotoxicity assessment.
5.Environmental Quality and Analysis: environmental sampling and analysis;
measurement of work environment; biological monitoring; industrial
nanotoxicology.
