Railway Technical Center

         Introduction
Rail services in Taiwan currently include those provided by Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR), Taiwan Railways
Administration, the mass rapid transit systems, and light rail transit systems. After the Forward-Looking Infrastructure
Development Program was launched in 2017, the THSR Corporation predicted that numerous openings for talent
specialized in railroad development would be available within 10 years. Because Taiwan’s railroad equipment is mostly
imported, track maintenance and equipment parts depend on foreign suppliers to a great extent, which has resulted in
inadequate systematic integration and problem-solving abilities in Taiwan. To reduce Taiwan’s dependence on foreign
suppliers, we must identify key items and gradually integrate them into domestic manufacturing to enhance the
independent research and development (R&D) competence of Taiwanese railroad-related industries.

         Research Areas
Railway Technical Center (RTC) in National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology has devoted itself
to railroad technology R&D, as well as talent cultivation, for more than 6 years. During our industry–academia
collaboration with railway corporation, 105 systems that we developed were certificated and introduced on Orbit
line. RTC will link collaborative businesses to jointly build an innovative R&D base for railroad technologies on
the basis of an industry–academia–research integration framework. The project will apply R&D on major
technologies to three primary railroad maintenance items: signs, vehicles, and power supplies. By increasing
investment of high-level talent in practical fields and expanding the capacity of domestic talent, we can improve
the independent development of railroad technologies in Taiwan.
