PRACTICES OF PRAYER
8.1 THE TIME OF PRAYER
It was the practice of the Jewish people to pray private prayers
rd
three times a time. They prayed a morning prayer (3 hour), a
th
h
midday prayer (6 hour -15:00), and the evening prayer (9 hour).
They divided a day from sunrise to sunset into 12 hours. Thus days
were not always equally long at different times of the year.
rd
The 3 hour was 9:00 in the morning
th
The 9 hour was at 3:00 p.m. (midday/time depending on
the time of sunrise)
Read Luke 18:7, Acts 3:1 and 10:9, and 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to see
these practices for yourself.
Read Luke 22:39. What stands out in this verse?
Application
a. Identify the things that stand in the way of regular prayer in
your life?
b. Why is it good to form a regular prayer-time routine?
8.2 OUR POSTURE WHEN WE PRAY
We find different bodily postures during prayer in the Old and New
Testament. Look at the different passages and determine the
posture mentioned there.
Luke 18:11-13 and Matt 6:5
▪ Remember, many events took place while people were
standing. People stood during meetings, during court cases,
and also in the church. The preacher was the one sitting
during a worship service.
