           A Hermeneutics Study

Javanese women are culturally known as kanca wingking referring to their

responsibility for doing domestic chores. Women are also seen as “prides” for

men complementing turonggo (riding animal), kukilo (bird pet), wismo

(house) and curigo (weapon/skill). This article explores the portrayal of

Javanese women through the lyrics of Javanese songs popularized by

Waljinah by applying qualitive method which focuses on hermeneutic

analysis. This analysis enables us to unravel meanings from a written text,

such as song lyrics. Therefore, the primary data are taken from selected

Waljinah’s songs. The secondary data are taken from the literatures on

Javanese songs, hermeneutics, and the sociological context of society when

the songs were popular. The results show that the selected songs illustrate

Javanese women as active, motherly, and independent indicating remarkable

traits of Javanese women. The traits are well demonstrated in the songs titled

Walang Kekek (grasshopper), Lelo Ledung (lullaby), and Resepsi (wedding

                      party)

Keywords: bargaining position, independency, Javanese songs, Walang Kekek
