“When the Girls getting into Hip-Hop Music”
Indonesian Youth and Hip-Hop Music Consumption
in the Internet Age

The internet is recently integrated into everyday life of people around the world
as a new medium of information and communication. It is indispensable. In
today Indonesian context, there are many Indonesian who like to spend more of
their daily lives connect to the internet, in particular the youngsters. Internet is
able to facilitate the interconnection of Indonesian youngsters locally, regionally
and globally through larger communities around the world. It is clear, that this
interconnectedness provokes a new global sense of reshaping cultural artifact
and making meaning process as well. Indeed, internet provides new ways for
someone in (re) organizing music, and also how she/he experiences it. This
potentially will altering the ways in which one defines his/her musical taste to
become more eclectic, rather than just bonded by any conventional definition.
This paper explores Indonesian young girls conception of music taste related to
the context of musical consumption in the internet age, in particular how they
use the internet in which they interact with, in order to access and listen to Hip-
Hop music, and how they construct their own narratives as well. Further, it
explores the role of the internet in mediating the relationship between them and
Hip-Hop music nowadays. How the internet reshapes the musical taste of
Indonesian young girls in particular their understanding of Hip-Hop genre. How
this triangular relationship between youth, music and the internet represents a
continuing desire to engage with one another.
This research used virtual ethnographic approach by focusing on daily activities
of Indonesian girls from different provinces who have been engaging and
consuming Hip-Hop Music from the internet.
The results of the research show that in the internet age, mostly subjects of this
research are able to redefine their musical tastes, not merely following
conventional definition of genre based on technologies they use. The hierarchy of
musical taste including the choice of intra genre in Hip-Hop Music is getting
blurred in the internet age. It gives opportunity and space for subjects to do
exploration more on multiple songs of Hip-Hop, to engage deeply with artists
and songs that they like, and also to expand their knowledge related to Hip-Hop.
The profound engagement with internet contributes to reshaping subjects taste
on music especially how they conceive and perceive Hip-Hop music in which has
been undergoing stereotyping in dominant culture for decades. The new
engagement breaks down social taboos, and helping subjects in reformatting
their identities in the midst of technological changing rapidly.
