The internet is recently integrated into everyday life of people around the world

as a new medium of information and communication. It is indispensable. In

today Indonesian context, there are many Indonesian who like to spend more of

their daily lives connect to the internet, in particular the youngsters. Internet is

able to facilitate the interconnection of Indonesian youngsters locally, regionally

and globally through larger communities around the world. It is clear, that this

interconnectedness provokes a new global sense of reshaping cultural artifact

and making meaning process as well. Indeed, internet provides new ways for

someone in (re) organizing music, and also how she/he experiences it. This

potentially will altering the ways in which one defines his/her musical taste to

become more eclectic, rather than just bonded by any conventional definition.

This paper explores Indonesian young girls conception of music taste related to

the context of musical consumption in the internet age, in particular how they

use the internet in which they interact with, in order to access and listen to Hip-

Hop music, and how they construct their own narratives as well. Further, it

explores the role of the internet in mediating the relationship between them and

Hip-Hop music nowadays. How the internet reshapes the musical taste of

Indonesian young girls in particular their understanding of Hip-Hop genre. How

this triangular relationship between youth, music and the internet represents a

continuing desire to engage with one another.

This research used virtual ethnographic approach by focusing on daily activities

of Indonesian girls from different provinces who have been engaging and

consuming Hip-Hop Music from the internet.

The results of the research show that in the internet age, mostly subjects of this

research are able to redefine their musical tastes, not merely following

conventional definition of genre based on technologies they use. The hierarchy of

musical taste including the choice of intra genre in Hip-Hop Music is getting

blurred in the internet age. It gives opportunity and space for subjects to do

exploration more on multiple songs of Hip-Hop, to engage deeply with artists

and songs that they like, and also to expand their knowledge related to Hip-Hop.

The profound engagement with internet contributes to reshaping subjects taste

on music especially how they conceive and perceive Hip-Hop music in which has

been undergoing stereotyping in dominant culture for decades. The new

engagement breaks down social taboos, and helping subjects in reformatting

their identities in the midst of technological changing rapidly.
