The allowable stress for a butt weld is normally equal to allowable stress in
tension for the plate material being welded.

According to AISC, the maximum size of a fillet weld is as follow:

          1. Along square edges of plates less than 6.4mm, the maximum size fillet

is equal to the thickness of the plates

         2. Along square edges of plates of 6.4 thick or more, the maximum size is

1.6 mm less than the thickness of the plates.

The allowable shear stress for a fillet weld is typically 30% of the
          electrode strength level

Electrode Strength level (MPa) Allowable shear stress (MPa)
