Example 2 : A 10 mm x 100 mm square edge plate is to be welded to a
heavy plate using fillet weld shown below. Using class 400 MPa
electrodes, determine the required length of the weld if P is 200kN.
For class 400MPa electrode, Sv =120MPa.
For the 10 mm square plate,
leg size is 1.6 mm less than the thickness of the plate. Hence,
leg size is 10mm-1.6mm = 8.4 mm.
Total weld is 2L
since welded at both side of the plate..
P= Sv x 0.707x w x 2L
L = 200000 / (2x120x 10 x 0.707x 0.0084)

= 0.14m 130
= 140mm.
