P. 6

 Harry,
I am so excited to be given this opportunity to let you know how proud I am of you and all your accomplishments. How fitting that as you near the end of your remarkable career, you have been chosen to serve as this year’s Honoree for the City of Hope.
Throughout our 39 years of marriage, I have watched you in numerous corporate roles. One thing I always admired was that you never asked something of others that you wouldn’t do yourself. I remember times that you would go into the warehouse and help pick orders, or ride with the drivers so you could understand how demanding their jobs could be. You have always looked out for your associates / team, recognizing that decisions you make or policies you put in place directly impact those around you. Regardless of your role, you have always managed to create a culture of respect and have encouraged a healthy work / life balance. Even when we moved to England where you were tasked with restructuring several European companies, you were quickly able to go from “Hatchet Harry”
to a trusted leader by charming them with your American humor.
I have been touched reading so many of the letters and emails you have received after announcing your retirement. People from all facets of your career echoed similar themes and traits that made you stand out as a leader. Your ability to listen to people and genuinely care about their concerns as well as your ability to inspire and empower has positively impacted so many.
Although your career has been a large part of your life, you have always managed to put your family first. And the same traits that have made you a great leader have made you an amazing husband and father to our kids. You have taught our children the value of hard work and determination through your own work ethic. You have shown us time and time again the importance of treating all people with respect and that kindness can never be overstated. Your gentle encouragement has always inspired us to be better people.
You have worn many hats throughout the years and, until recently, the one you wore most proudly was that of “Dad”. But all that changed a few short years ago with your new title of “Papa”. I love to watch you light up when one of the grandchildren says your name or wraps their little arms around your neck. I laugh every time you put on your Papa socks and proudly show off your ankles to anyone who will look. The little ones love and adore you just as the rest of us do!
You and I have had quite a ride together with many memorable moments along the way. We have had to weather a few storms, but they have only strengthened the bonds we share as a family. After all these years together, I have witnessed in you again and again, all the traits that embody the “Spirit of Life”. It is with great pride that I stand by your side as you receive this incredibly prestigious award.
With love and admiration, Sheryl – Xoxox
