Other Visual Strategies
There are other strategies that help organize information for visual learners, although
they may be too involved to complete during class. Use them when taking textbook
notes or combining class and textbook notes for review.
■ Timelines. Use a timeline to organize information into chronological order. Draw
a vertical or horizontal line on the page and place tic marks on the line in order,
noting the dates and filling in basic event descriptions.
■ Tables. Use the columns and rows of a table to organize information as you con-
dense and summarize your class and textbook notes.
■ Branch diagrams. This type of diagram, also called a tree chart, shows how items
that come from a single source are related to one another. Typical examples of
branch diagrams include family trees, evolutionary charts, and organizational
charts (for people or files). Key 6.7 illustrates a partial branch diagram represent-
ing the structure of a chemistry department website in a small college.
■ Flowchart. This diagram shows a set of ordered steps that make up a process. The
diagram often includes points where you have to make a decision before proceeding
in a particular direction. For example, Key 6.8 illustrates a flowchart that could
help you remember the steps to learning a new software program.
KEY 6.7 A branch diagram shows relationships.
