WRITE IT Communicate

Emotional intelligence journal: Addiction. Discuss how you feel about addiction in any
form—to alcohol, drugs, food, sex, the Internet, gambling—whether or not it you have had direct
or indirect experience with it. Imagine that a close friend or family member has a dangerous
addiction of some kind. Use your emotional intelligence to describe how you would address the
problem with that person to produce the best possible outcome.
Real-life writing: Health on campus. Think about what you consider to be the most signifi-
cant health issue at your school—safety, substance abuse, anxiety and depression, weight manage-
ment, and so on. Write a 500-word editorial for your school paper on the topic, describing the
details of the problem and proposing one or more solutions. For example, if weight control is a
problem, you might suggest changing the contents of the drink vending machines. When you are
done, consider submitting your editorial to the paper (have an instructor or peer review it before
                              you send it in).

                              Wellness at Work

Taking responsibility for your health can make you a more valuable employee, in part because
many companies are putting pressure on their employees to do more in less time. Increased work
burdens, late nights, and work calls during weekends or off-hours create a great deal of stress for
workers. In addition, health care costs are on the rise for companies.
Part of your responsibility involves getting routine screenings from a doctor or health clinic.
Below is a list of health items commonly tested during screening. Using the Internet or your library,
research the listed items. For each, describe: (1) What the item is and why it is important to your
overall health; (2) what the normal range is for the item and what numbers (high, low, or both)
indicate a concern; and (3) what to do if you have abnormal results for this item.
