FIND INTERESTING CLUBS
Complete the following on paper or in digital format.
Read through your student handbook and school website about all of the clubs offered at your college and note
what catches your attention. The following are just some of the possible categories, to get you thinking:
Religion Instrumental/vocal music Greek life
Politics Cultures Volunteering and service
Sports Ethnicities Print and electronic media
Fitness/wellness Foods Academic organizations
Visual art Students with disabilities Professional organizations
Dance and theater Countries and languages Student government
List two specific groups that you will explore in the next month. Find contact information for them using school pub-
lications or online resources. Then contact them and have a real-time conversation with an officer or member of each
club or group. Ask questions like:
■ What is the time commitment?
■ What are the people like who participate in this group?
■ Are there costs involved in participating?
■ Are there any requirements for members?
With your increased understanding of what membership in these two groups is like, make an informed decision
about whether to get involved.
Different sports and teams function independently, although there is
usually a director who oversees all intramural sports. Participation is not
restricted to playing the sport itself. You could also coach or officiate or help
out in some other capacity. Furthermore, even if your college does not have
an official intramural program, other opportunities exist. Explore your
school’s list of clubs to see if there are any club sports that interest you.
Visual and Performing Arts Groups
You don’t have to be an art, music, theater, or dance major to participate in an
art form that you enjoy. Most arts groups will welcome students whether they
are majors or not, although particular groups may hold auditions or require
you to meet other selection criteria.
You may find groups offering different types of vocal or instrumental
music, dance styles, and improv or other acting opportunities. A cappella
(vocals without instrumental accompaniment) groups have become extremely
popular in recent years, and some campuses feature several different groups.
Visual arts groups may focus on all kinds of art media, including graphic
arts. Some groups may produce performances or have opportunities for
