KNOW IT Think Critically
Improve How You Relate to Others
Build basic skills. Effective teamwork in study groups and project teams depends in part on
team members knowing themselves well and contributing in ways that best suit them. Answer the
following questions to define yourself as a team member:
1. What are your natural talents and abilities?
2. What skills have you worked hard to build and maintain?
3. What are your teamwork “likes”—what you like to do when working with others?
4. What are your teamwork “dislikes”—what you do not like to do when working with others?
Take it to the next level. Now consider past experience with pair or group work. Continuing
your written or typed work, describe:
■ Types of people or situations that boost your productivity and attitude, including an example
of this from your life
■ Types of people or situations that make you less productive and positive, including an exam-
ple of this from your life
Move toward mastery. Considering your self-knowledge and experience, design your involve-
ment for maximum benefit in both a project team and a study group. Ideally, you will write plans
for a specific study group that you are in for a course, and a specific project team that you are in
or will need to participate in this term for one of your classes (search your syllabi for possibil-
ities). If you are not in a study group and/or have no project this term that requires teamwork,
create imaginary groups with specific goals and projects. Describe, as specifically as you can:
■ Your most productive role in an actual or imagined study group
■ Your most productive role in an actual or imagined project team
